The Fae Language

Gaby

Lord of Altera
Fae -
[To be added!]
this is a travesty.

we have like 100 caparii characters, and we still don't know anything about Fae.

so what I'm going to do here is try my best to create the fae language, by making up as many words for things as I can, and jotting down whatever notes I can think of about things like grammar structure and the fae accent. Im doing this based on my caparii names post: http://hollowworld.co.uk/threads/caparii-names.29113/

and @Somnastra 's Lexicon Primer: http://hollowworld.co.uk/threads/language-lexicon-primer.27793/

this is entirely unofficial, so don't take this to heart! if there's some resource on Fae (like. one confirmed official fae word) (think there's one in the Lore forum) that I haven't seen, send it over, I will be grateful!

God, I forgot about that. School distracted me from it.

But yes, it was impossible to find out any history or backstory on Fae, or how it.. worked as a language.

To me, Fae always made me think of Celtic/Gothic tongues, perhaps ancient (gothic) French could suit it...

thats entirely different from the romance languages, Val.
so different.
Who talked about romance? French has come a loooong way before being the tongue of diplomacy and culture... We come from barbarians aswell... ;)

spanish is a romance language. as is modern french. they both have origins liked to latin, the language of the romans.

gaelic and other celtic/gothic languages are not romance languages.
im assuming ancient french isnt a romance language either.

I was like comparing it because the caparii names have similar sounds to spanish which is a romance language and idk where im going with this

Spanish is horrid so ya' know. Spoken quickly and with the way people tend to speak it in a casual setting it is horrible. I live not all too far from the border of Mexico and the way it is spoken around here, it isn't elegant or beautiful unless it is PURPOSEFULLY made to sound like that.

In my head the fae should have a part of romance in their tongue... Faes do not only mean Caparii, it also mean all kinds of faeries, ents, shapeshifters (werewolves and whatnot). Even though they also include viler and less intelligent species, i believe Fae tongue should have a degree of wisdom to it.

But well, who am I to take decisions? I am a 100% human player, so yeah :p

Romance in terms of language does not equate to romance in terms of... ummm... lovelythings.

Don't forget goat mouths can make different noises and stuff.

I recommend working with Som on this, if you're really interested in the language being similar to Elven (which it would realistically be, for the Forest Elf dialect at least) :D

No, no hay problema con el español además de ser raro
ok so maybe Im rusty in my spanish.
I learned it from hanging around english-speakers ok?

Salheira learned common from hanging around common-speakers, and she doesn't have a perfect grasp why should I?

*grumble might as well have asked why i forgot the other exclamation points and question marks...*

Im not particularly interested in it being like Elven. other than the connection to Shalherana, I don't see much similarity between caparii and elven cultures. the caparii names do sometimes seem elven, but at the same time...

ehhh. Idk. why not, right?

as for the goat sounds... caparii have the upper part of a human, and while I understand that would have nothing to do with limitations on their biology...
caparii can speak other languages perfectly, and other races can speak fae perfectly. incorporating nonhuman sounds into fae would not only be difficult to translate into english letters, but also might violate rp.
eh.
