Wycroe's Backstory
Wycroe grew up like many, a hard-working young boy following in his father's footsteps. His family has owned and operated a mining company named the Deep Depths Mining Company for generations. The family originated many generations ago in a small village (now defunct) west of Warstrom. Wycroe's great-great grandfather made the decision to move after many years of living amongst people who had at best shunned, and at worst ridiculed and attacked them for being different. Town life no longer suited the patriarch of the family, and after several days of travel, the family of three came to a vast body of water. No people were to be found, which is exactly what this small family wanted.
His great-great grandfather took up fishing to support and feed his family, and he became well-respected by the few people in the area as an excellent fisherman and scout. They built a small wooden shack in which to raise their small family. Eventually, as Wycroe's grandfather grew older, he met the woman who would become Wycroe's grandmother. A great falling out occurred, as Wycroe's great-great grandfather did not approve of this woman-she came from a family who had treated them poorly indeed.
Wycroe's grandfather, unable to convince the old man that she was different, and unwilling to leave the woman he loved, took a small boat and rowed out onto the great ocean, hoping to find a new place to settle down. As fate would have it, they came upon a small but lush island teeming with plant- and animal life. Wycroe's grandfather landed his boat and set out to build a new home.
Originally the house was nothing more than a dirt shack, allowing for little more than a cooking fire and a bed roll. As time passed, Wycroe's grandfather began to dig beneath the surface of the island, looking for stone with which to build his house...although many trees grew here, it was necessary to build from stronger materials, due to the frequent earthquakes that shook the area.
Over time, a small but comfortable stone house stood upon the large hill on the island. Wycroe's grandfather raised a family of 3 boys and 1 girl, who would all follow in their fathers' tracks, taking up mining and fishing as their trade.
Wycroe's aunt moved away early in life, going to live back on the mainland with other family, unable to cope with the loneliness of the island. Two of his uncles also moved away to start up businesses in the bigger cities which had sprung up around the ocean. Only Wycroe's father, Stevros, and his uncle Byntan, remained on the island to keep the family business alive.
They expanded the family home into a large but comfortable stone and wood house, allowing for the family to grow and expand. They became well known as strong, intelligent miners, able to find and dig up elusive minerals, all the while avoiding disastrous cave-ins with literally oceans of water above them. Lava tubes also presented grave dangers to them as they never knew exactly where the next lava flow would break through their walls. Wycroe's father and uncle made numerous visits to the cities, using their brothers as contacts within them to sell their wares. It was on one such trip that Stevros would meet Wycroe's mother Aileen.
Aileen moved out to the island shortly after, and together started a family with Stevros. The two brothers continued their succesful mining company, digging deeper and deeper, chasing the elusive minerals demanded by the cities. Stevros and Aileen would eventually have 4 children, Wycroe being the oldest, followed by brothers Amman, Derok and the baby of the family, sister Sylie.
Wycroe, being the oldest, was quickly trained to fish for the family, freeing up his father and uncle to expand their mine. Wycroe enjoyed his time fishing, the solitude on the lake giving him freedom from the cries of his siblings.
Unfortunately, just recently, disaster struck this small, close-knit family. Unknown to any of them, deep within the earth lay extensive labrynthine caverns, within which lived many evil monsters. Stevros and Byntan accidentally burrowed into one of these small branches and unleashed a horde of creatures. These creatures quickly overran the two men and rose to the surface to find a house unguarded, and Wycroe's siblings and mother clearing the land around the mine entrance. The monsters murdered the loving family, leaving only Wycroe, who was still on the water fishing, alive. The monsters, unused to the bright lights of the surface world, retreated deep into the earth, leaving death and destruction in their wake.
Upon returning home, Wycroe was met with a scene of utter devastation. His family was dead, his house burnt mostly to the ground, and no trace of his father or uncle. He was easily able to follow the trail back to the mine entrance, and without thinking entered the mine. He followed the trail back through the mine to the point where the monsters had been released but still found no trace of his father or uncle. Using a broken pickaxe found against a wall, Wycroe collapsed this tunnel, hoping to seal the creatures within. As he made his way back to the surface, Wycroe was attacked by a shuffling, undead monstrosity who came stumbling out of the dark at him. Wycroe managed to defeat this foe, but suffered terrible injuries at the same time. Eventually Wycroe was able to return to the surface and get back to the house, entering the basement of the house and locking the door behind him.
The next day, still battered and in pain, Wycroe went back outside to perform the grisly task of burying his family on a small island to the south of the house. His uncle's cottage, on anothe small island, was boarded up. Wycroe was despondent and unsure what to do. Although he had met his other uncles before, he did not know them well, nor did he know how to get to the cities they reside in. With very little conact with the larger world, and rarely seen away from his island home, Wycroe continues his lonely existence on the island, going through the motions of fishing for food; all the while he dreamt up ways to exact revenge for his family, and seek out clues as to the whereabouts of his father and uncle.

Here ends the history of Wycroe. Stay tuned as the beginning of a new tale unfolds!
