isn't this just the rumors thread V2.0?
Rumors and common knowledge are different.
Common knowledge is "romans were an empire that extended all the way around the mediterranean sea".
Rumors is "I heard you can see Pirate's butt if you pay him 20 Radiants" :D

Okay so a common knowledge/lore question...
How aware would people be of infection/germs?
Obviously if you don't keep a cut clean it'll get gross and dirty and stinky, but would people really know what was going on there?

Yes, but I often her people talk about germs and infections....
I do not believe the scientific community of this time was quite aware of these sorts of things.

Microorganisms are very much a recent discovery, but infection (as in bad things happening to a wound) is not.

In all honesty, the doctor characters shouldn't know or be able to do a lot of the stuff they do, but a lot of us take some liberties because the alternative is amputations and/or death as the cure to everything. Like, seriously, even the bandages at the time seemed to increase the chance of infection just due to the materials used. I can't speak for everyone, but I find myself constantly balancing my desire for realism and my desire to help everyone else have an enjoyable experience.

While we are around 1500s this world has magic and ancient people who were alive during the techno magic days. It wouldn't be inconceivable that these folks would have better medical care than our world at the same time period simply due to a combination of magical research and ancient knowledge being passed down. I'm not talking cell theory but more like they figured out sooner than the rest of us keeping hands and tools clean and such was an extremely important thing. Boiled water or dipping a blade in strong alcohol they wouldn't know why they are actually doing it but their ancestors who did passed it down and those who keep the old traditions have patients who live longer vs the ones with dirty hands and rusty blades.

I have this book "scientific theory for dummies", which sounds way dumber than it is, but regarding the whole "do they know germs", I read about a doctor called Ignaz Semmelweis, who around 1844-1848 made a study about mortality rates regarding births. To sum it up - He made some different changes to try and lower the rates, but found out the doctors just needed to wash their hands between births. His proposal was not accepted and he was seen as stupid (He was actually sent to an insane's asylum because of this), until some time after his death, where they tried his proposal, and the mortality rate became better. So I doubt we actually knew much about germs and all that, taking this as an example.

So in short, our characters should actually not know that washing hands in between operations is smart.

We have had hand washing passed down for a significant amount of time now, it was even one of the tenets of the Silver Serpent.

So I believe that characters could/would be aware that washing hands, cleaning wounds, not using rusty tools, would all be things that should just be down for activities like medicine and maybe even eating.

Ic I usually attribute "infection" to tiny little bugs getting into your wounds and making things gross. These would be bugs more akin to gnats and chiggers.

I also Rp it, but regarding time and medieval europe, this story is just an example that a lot of what seems obvious to us, was not as obivious back then :D

Depends on the character, but my doctor folks generally attribute it to "bad spirits/humours/rot under the skin/karma".

Or the far more common "Tzemik was spreading the plague/rot because someone pissed her off again"

When Niko applies vodka to wounds he came up with the idea of the skin provides stability for the body and if it is broken, the body will begin self-destructing. He then believes that making the body drunk will stop it from completing its task.

Maybe people need to accept that having a sword stabbed through their leg could cause infection and need amputation. An enjoyable experience doesn't have to be 'slap a bandaid on it and we're all good.' I like this post, though. I just wish that people knew OOC when to draw a line between realistic and hyper-fantasy-magic-work, ya know?

A lot of people use google to come up with ideas on how to heal wounds IC afaik. I do agree, though- but it might be more realistic if people started testing things more IC (I know some people do this already hehe).

I've found google can help solve problems, like; Sometimes there can be a disparity between what the characters injury is and how it is described/portrayed - Which leads to doctor-characters making weird mistakes IC because of an OOC miscommunication. Thats one thing I've seen happen (As someone who did/does a lot of medical RP) and still don't know how to completely avoid without treading into metaterritory...

I restrict my google use to stuff Ater would know, and it's typically the really simple stuff that I've memorized anyways at this point.

As for where to draw the line, I draw it at any permanent physical change to a character. Amputation, crippling, etc, I'll typically push realism aside so folks can keep their characters. After all, a crippled character isn't everyone's cup of tea. Trust me, though, I never just slap a bandaid on it, nor do I think any of the doctor characters do.

That being said, if at any point you're doing medical rp with me (and I typically ask if the wound is that bad), you're welcome to tell me OOCly to bump up the realism. I'm always willing to hack off a limb or two.
