Greeting man, woman, tyran, vampire, demon or otherwise!
Altera wants you!

if you havnt already, do read this
If you have then you already know that Altera is under attack! Queen Grief has broken out of her mind prison and has brought chaos and death to Hollowworld! The kings are hard at work to seal away the entrance to the nether, in order to stop the flood of the armies of naught. However brute force, nerves of steel, advanced magics, unwavering courage and dashing good looks only go so far. We need you! yes i mean you! to aid in the effort to stop the forces of Queen Grief.

Now for this serious bit.
At the current point in time, vangarrett(assuming he agrrees) and I are the lead architects on the fortress city we shall build. Therefore, we will be collaborating with the kings and Kings hands, to determine what we wish to build. We will also collaborate with any new Head architects and any ideas are greatly apreciated.

Firstly there will be a large chasm around the portal with someform of deathtrap at the bottom of it. A wall will stand around that chasm, leaving armies no room to grasp. This means that the wall will be extremely sheer.
The wall itself will probably be built by solely the mods and admins and the architects(Maybe) so as to make sure the whole wall is the same design. After that, we want you to get creative. We want you to build. Now we aint talkin some nambi pambi wussy inn or a nice safe log cottage. We want fortifications! we want barracks, hospitals garrisons armories training grounds the works! They will be placed outside the main wall. The fortress city (Most likely) will be split into sectors.
Imagine a circle. That is the nether protal and the chasm around it. Outside of that circle is a ring. This is the wall. Outside that circle is sector 1. This will contain largely millitary garrions, because if the wall fails, these will be the first under attack. Then outside there will be a smaller wall. Outside that is sector 2. The wall dividing sectors 1 and 2 will have only 2 entrances/exits. These will be sealed with redstone piston gates. The gates themselves will require a combination lock where the levers are placed in different buildings within that sector. Sector 2 will contain mostly barracks and hospitals, so that if the wall fails and sector 1 is attacked, the wounded may be moved quickly into sector 2, and the barracks may reinforce the garrisons. Then there will be another wall, and sector 3, which will contain nobility quarters, a few barracks and the training grounds, which will provide a steady source of soldiers for the army garrisoned at this place.(Needs a name, Someone make a thread for ideas, and then make a poll)

These are the basic plans, but we need you to build them.
Prefered materials
Obsidian: extremely strong, with a flat surface without hand holds, will most likely be used for the walls.
Stone: we all know it, stone is strong. hard to break and fire resistant.
Cobblestone:this is not as strong as stone, and doesnt look as good so lets make this to only pathways and the bases of buildings
Brick: Stronger even then stone, brick takes a long time to break and is also fire resistant. However if you wanna use brick, u had better have enough, a half brick half stone building looks awkward.
Iron Block: Whats stronger than iron? Very strong and fire resistant, however also expensive.
Diamond Block: Our enemies, the destroyers have a strange vulnerability to diamonds. They cant touch them. Diamond to a corruptor is like cold iron to a faerie. If you place a block of this, the corruptors will be unable to remove it whatsoever, but it is massively expensive.
Stone slabs: these for nice sturdy stairs, and can act as wall reinforccements when placed 2 on top of each other.

NO DIRT GRAVEL OR SAND! the enemy are the corruptors, the destroyers! these materials take very few hits until they are destroyed.

USE VERY LITTLE WOOD AND WOOl wood and wool are vulnerable to one of the corruptors favorite weapons, fire. If walls and buildings are built with these the enemy will burn through us.

The pathways through the city, shall be treacherous, we will need redstone architects, and lots of them. Personally i am exceptional with redstone, as are betty and sonkiro. We will probably supervise trap and door creation.

Vangarrett is good with building keeps, walls fortresses etc. If you need inspiration or help go to him.

**New section:

Gentlemen! The time will come very soon for you to serve your country! Our most recent intel reports say that there is a nether portal somewhere far to the south craddled within a valley surrounded by mountains. Our enemies are gathering, we expect the full assault within the month! Untill then they will doubtless be sending scouts and raiding parties. Therefore the esteemed Knights of the North Wind will be protecting the workers while we build the fortress.

Therefore! Start amassing materials! The kings will lay the foundation and Ducati will enchant it to make sure that every building we create there will be strong. Until such time as they finish the base we are forbidden from building there!
We need every able bodied citizen to help us defeat Queen Grief!

I will be posting a diagram soon of what this should about look like(the layout of sectors)
Fitz i need screencaps of the area around the portal, both ingame and on the map.

I will gladly help you in this endeavour in whatever is needed and have a good idea for an archery training ground if you are interested
Edit: I will also supply Iron or diamond for the creation of armaments if needs be

I am most definitely up for this. I'm thinking we will need a garrison of sorts to fend off enemies while the builders work, and as well as this we should have people dedicated to mining materials in sufficient supplies to allow progress to continue smoothly. I think Minecraft may be the only thing in the universe where it is easier to build things than break them, so we'll have to have more miners working than builders. I suggest that since the fortress will be divided into sectors, then for each sector we should have an underground strip mine to supply stone and other materials. We will have to probably have work rotations so that nobody gets bored, and communicate via teamspeak so everyone knows what's happening.

I think it would be a good if the keeps were placed as close to the edge as possible, and each sector commanded from its keep. That way the Keep commanders will never become lazy or sloppy, as they will know that if something breaks through, they are on the front line. Also the Keeps are the strongest structures, therefore position at the edge will ensure a solid defence.

I believe also that if we will be guarding a large pit, the sides if which will be the wall, then there is no need for the first wall to come up farther than ground level (although it will go down to bedrock or near enough to make no difference). The second wall should be taller than the first, so as to easily contain any attempted breakouts. The towers of the inner wards should only have access from the second palisade and be linked to it via arched viaducts which will be complimented by machicolations to allow for safe dispatch of enemies. The connection for the keeps to the second wall should be a solid wall in itself, this will prevent large numbers of the enemy from gathering in one area, this will prevent enemies spewing in from one sector to another and thus overwhelming it.

This plan will mean that the first sector will be divided into two sets of wards, the outer wards which will contain nothing but killing grounds etc, and the inner wards which will contain all the most necessary fighting elements of the fortress. The first wall will be sheer, as legion says, it will be very tall, but I suggest the top sits flush with the surface of the ground at the surface and that there are no crenelations of any sort. I suggest this mainly because the wall will be so tall that any projectiles sent towards the top of it will fall short, and the angle to shoot at the bottom will be so steep that battlements of any sort will restrict retaliation. Furthermore, sortie's into the outer ward to drive back any enemies that somehow gain access to it will have the advantage of a wall to their backs, and the foe will have the disadvantage of empty space to theirs. Somewhat like 300 when they drove the elephants over the edge.

In this way the first and greatest of the walls will pretty much be entirely underground. It will be extremely difficult to take, although I imagine more like impossible by non magical means, and it shall be extremely easy to retake, as there will be the support of nearby towers and there will not be any advantage for the enemy should they have control of it. In fact I see it as a death trap more than anything else. Somewhat like allowing the waves of the sea to wash in, but only to a specified point, then like the sea, the waves will roll back (with our encouragement) having done little, if any damage, and ensuring they have the maximum losses possible, and we have the least danger possible.

Well those are my thoughts on the matter concerning the front lines, I'm not sure how accurate this is, especially concerning the first wall reaching down into a pit, or if the ground will be level throughout. It's all basically just suggestions, and not all may agree with them, but it is what I feel would make the best set-up.

Also don't forget there will be new blocks in 1.8 and we shall have to take account of those. Personally I quite like the idea of building with cobble bricks, or stone bricks, they may or may not exist but I did see them in a video. I think that would make it look more aesthetically pleasing that just stone and stone slabs throughout.

Just a thought but i think it might be useful, maybe only people with Knight or above should build the first wall to avoid incidents of the really-big-drop-to-your-death variety

Well castellan thie first wall may be only built by mods kings and architects. The first wall must be the most secure, so we need our best people on the job. Also if the wall isnt built in the same manner throughout then there may be stresspoints that the enemy can notice. The entiire wall must be uniform, so that no one position is any easier to attack then a nother. Without a stresspoint to guide them, the enemy will most likely attack all over thge wall, rather than a single point

@Vangarrett. my thoughts exactly. The keeps will house the levers to open the piston gates going into each sector. Also the corruptors love fire. So lits give them water. The corruptors cant swim, so we should have an aqueduct running from the sea to the pit, so that we may open the flood gates when the enemy attacks, and watch them drown.

Each sector should have 3 keeps. Each keep has either a king or a mod to command the ward the keep is in. The closer to the pit, the more kings will be commanding.

Each inner wall that divides sectors will have only 2 entrances/exits sealed with piston gates. To open the gate each lever in the three keeps must be hit, and then 2 levers on site of the gate itself. This way, before the enemy attacks, the keep commanders will have their leveers always on, so troops and builders may come and go. When the enemy attacks, the commanders turn their levers off so that the enemy wont break through.
Also, i see no reason not to make the inner most wall, the one outside the pit, as tall as possible. The taller it is the more they fall when they jump or are pushed off. The taller the wall, the harder it is to scale it. Also the taller the wall, the cooler it looks XD also having it level with the ground is a safety hazard for our own troops. Though we will see.

For the initial gathering of resources (and in the future as well just because if it is done well it could look awesome), I propose building a scaffolding system out of wood into the chasm to obtain exposed ore and discover potential caves and other weak points in our defenses.

The structure should be made entirely out of wood so we can destroy it quickly if the enemy tries to use it. Every time a vein is extracted from the cliff face the heroic miner who braves these treacherous catwalks should wall of his hole and place a door so future miners can flee into these safehouses in the event of a ghast attack or scaffolding fire. then once the Knights of the Northern Wind (knights who can fly, air assault unit of sorts) have disposed of the threat we can safely extract the miner who was in danger.

Lord Zanros Hawklight
One problem though Fitz, the enemy enjoy the use of fire and if the scaffold is made of wood it will easily burn, may i suggest that you may want to mae it out of wooden half blocks as these wouldn't burn (unless Notch has changed this) and are much sturdier than normal wooden planks.
Edit: Sorry if it seems like i am making alot of suggestions but i have alot of ideas buzzing in my head, i am in no way critisising what anyone else is saying

James Conder

I think I might like it here
I agree with Van Garrett, in the sense that we will need more miners than builders. I would like to volunteer to be a miner. Also I was just wondering, will the frotifications be constantly under seige whilst being built?

Well the enemies of naught are gathering, however they are crippled. Normally they would be a massive tactical threat, but their leader, Queen Grief, has been driven insane by her 9 dimensional mind prison. Our intel suggests they are amassing but it is very disorganized, my guess is that we will be able to complete the inner wall before they launch there assault.

As they are tactically crippled we have a chance. They will attempt to destroy us through brute force and mass numbers. The kings themselves will handle Grief, if we can hold of the armies. This scaffolding idea is good, however i instead propose sand. Sand can burn, and if we need to get rid of them, we can simply start from the bottom, because it falls, ratther then climb all te way up, risking the enemy just set it alight.
