History:

Birthplace:
An unknown Silver Elf town.

Childhood:

Cut short when her and her twin were sold off into work camps as slaves. See backstory for more details.

Adulthood:

Spent the first part as a carpenter before being accepted into the Rangers where she began rigorous training. The rest of her adulthood up until now was filled with life among the Rangers and fighting in 4 major wars. She now attempts a peaceful life with Cloud and tending the Eldinari trees.

Back Story:

Mairin sat kicking her leg against a fence, perched on top of it as she slightly scowled at people passing. Eating a sweet of some sort, she'd watch them walk by, varying from wary to curious. About 10 years old, she was considered quite young by an elven lifespan and behaved as such, occasionally tossing a rock at a neighbor kid then hiding out of sight behind the fence posts, giggling to herself as they searched in vain for the perpetrator. Currently however, she was just sitting, and kicking a foot with a rhythmic *thump thump* and eating her sweets.

Suddenly a sharp tug on one of her pigtails caused her to turn with a 'serious' scowl only to find her twin Nylas grinning at her. With a sort of snort and huff she turned back to watching people and eating sweets, occasionally holding them out to her twin who had joined her on the fence. Behind them the sounds of arguing and shouting grow louder, but they pretend to not notice. Their father was in a state again. Not as drunk as usual but in a confrontation with another gentleman. The twins didn't know much about their father, still being so young. What they did know however was not to cross him in this state. So they ignored it as usual and continued their people watching. Bickering occasionally, as siblings do. Eventually, Mairin fished around in her bag and pulled out a square piece of wood, beginning to chip away at it with a small knife. Nylas watched her silently for a moment, then resumed his staring off. After several minutes, Mairin casually handed over a carved bird, with a fat stomach and small head. Nylas takes it with a grin, and ruffled Mairin's curly pig tails causing her to scowl and bat at him.

Finally, the man left giving them a thorough look over as he did, and their father came out onto the porch. He just sort of stared at them. Looking back towards him, the twins thought this odd but were not concerned enough to discontinue their fence sitting. For a while he stood there, drinking, and watching before returning to the house.

Nylas and Mairin decided they'd give it some time, before venturing back in, and took off into the woods. It wasn't uncommon for Forest Elf children to wander off into the woods, so they were not deterred and slipped easily away from the village. Going to their favorite spot, they pulled out their 'hunting knives' and 'bows' and made a game of shooting and hunting real wild animals and make believe ones. They'd act out skinning and cooking their catches, and dramatic injuries of hunts gone wrong. Finally they admitted how hungry they were in real life and headed back home.

Usually when entering their house after days like this, they'd go about their business unnoticed by their inattentive father. He kept to himself mostly. Brooding and yelling if bothered. So the twins took care of themselves. Cooking their dinners and preparing themselves for school. They didn't bring in the 'radiants' that they heard their dad scream and shout about, but they stayed out of the way. And that was good enough for them.

Tonight however had a different feel. Their father was sitting in a entryway chair when they came in, staring at them again with that odd look. A framed, small painting of their mother, whom they resembled greatly, was upright in it's frame, instead of face down as usual. The twins roamed their eyes between this picture and their father, slightly scowling in a unison of confusion. After an awkward moment, the twins cast one more glance at their father and wandered into the kitchen to make their supper.

All night this continued. At bed time something even stranger happened. Settling themselves into bed, with animated chatter about child things, their father entered the room. Falling silent instantly and resuming their confused scowls the twins watched as their father approached their bedsides. In a mind boggling moment, he leaned over and kissed them both on top of their heads. When he stood back up his eyes looked almost moist somehow and he turned and left without anything farther. The twins looked at each other, eyebrow raised in unison, then shrugged. Settling into bed they wrote it off as a weird day.

In the early morning, while they were still sound asleep is when they came. Pulled from their beds the twins awoke with a shocked start, flailing against the hands that pulled them along. Nylas planted his feet firmly and had to be drug along, twisting around to search for Mairin and grunting at the effort against being held. Mairin thrashed and bucked, shrieking and flinging limbs and her head into any area she could reach. Through the house they were dragged, passed their father who as again talking to the man from yesterday. No longer arguing he just looked pale, and ignored their cries and fearful glances for help. Muttering to the man, their father held out his hand, and the man placed a bag of radiants into it. Nylas started calling in almost a questioning bark, “Father? Father!!” But the hands are too strong and too many, and their father deaf to their pleas.

Confusion and fear gripped them as they continue to struggle all the way out into the yard. The neighbors still asleep or choosing to ignore the situation behind closed shutters. Coming out they noticed two horse drawn carriages. Old and battered ones, not like the fancy carriages the children used to dream of riding it. Panic truly set in when suddenly the men holding Nylas veered to the other cart while Mairin's captors started dragging her to the other. Sharp shrieks filled the air as Mairin went ballistic. Biting, scratching and tearing at every piece of skin she could see. Screaming for Nylas, she hangs onto the image of him, before he's finally dragged into the carriage and blocked from her view. Angry voices in a language she doesn't understand bicker back and forth as she continues to go wild in the carriage, drawing blood from several of the men holding her. Finally a sharp blow hits her in the side of the head, and everything goes black.

Waking up, she peered through swollen eyes at her surroundings. Several other dirty children sat around an empty room, blinking at her with wide, frightened eyes. Frowning in scared confusion, she glanced around the room rapidly, looking for Nylas. But he's not there, and only strangers stare back at her, lost in their own horrors. Some of the children whimper and cry, gibbering at her in languages she doesn't understand. Children of all races. Growing angry and afraid she glares at them then finds a corner and sits in it, knees pulled up to her chest and arms wrapped around them to stop her shaking.

Unsure of how much time had passed, Mairin spaced off into a daze, young mind unable to comprehend her situation. Finally the doors to the room opened, all the children wincing from the unexpected light that poured in. Squinting against it, she feels her adrenaline start to rise again, searching with blinded eyes for this new potential threat. It's the men again. They come in and start hauling children out, grabbing their arms or hair and dragging them, oblivious to their screams or fighting. One comes for her finally and she tries to brace her feet against the floor and arch her back away, screaming and spitting and snarling. But she is just comically dragged out of her corner and into the blinding light.

Tossed to the ground she leaps up, scrambling backwards until she hits a fence, solid and unmoving. Blinking rapidly and looking around she realizes she's outside. A large outdoor work yard is lined with a thick fence, sporting sharpened iron and glass along the top. One of the men is looking through a tome of sorts, making marks with a quill and gesturing the other men forward. They come and grab certain children, hauling them off to different parts of the yard. Mairin tries to watch as they go, to see what fate waits for her, but they are soon dragged out of view.

Finally a man comes for her and begins to haul her to the other side of the yard. Resuming her spitting and kicking, she struggles with all her might to get away. The man grows frustrated with her and grabs her head in his hand. His hand is so large the hand wraps around her entire skull almost. Forcing her to look over, she sees a boy her age getting whipped. Screaming and rolling on the ground as he is. She is held fast by the hand and made to watch for a moment, before coming face to face with her own captor. Yelling unknown words at her and gesturing to the boy, Mairin slowly understands that the same fate awaits her if she doesn't cooperate. Tossed to the ground, she gets back up, shaking like a leaf and allows herself to be pulled along. Glancing around as she's dragged, she notices people of all ages and races doing various manual labor. All overseen by some large man with a whip, yelling instructions and threats.

Panic took over her mind again, and she starts to plaintively whimper, pulling against her captor. Eyes darting around as his grip tightens and she's pulled along harder. Reaching a area consisting of lumber materials and a large workshop they stop. Words are exchanged between her captor and a grizzled looking, tired man who nods and gestures. Taking a few strides over, the man lifts and dumps Mairin on her backside leaving and walking away. Scrambling to her feet she starts to look for the nearest exit, but one of the big men with the sharp looking whips steps up and stands over her. Calming to a quiet tremble she waits, until the grizzled looking man comes over and with barked instructions leads her over to a pile of planks with some other children. Handing her a piece of sandpaper he makes a sanding motion with his hand and shouts at her. Quickly she bends to the piece of wood and begins sanding it, casting frightened glances over her shoulder as she does. But her efforts seem efficient for the time being and the man leaves her to this task.

Throughout that first day in the work camp, she watched and observed. What to do, what not to do, what earned you a whipping and what earned you an extra loaf of bread. For weeks she would search the camp for any sign of Nylas, before finally giving up hope that he was there somewhere with her. The few times she lost her calm and fought to get away were few indeed, as the whip would quickly bring her back around. She became engrossed in the work she did, using the chisel and hammer to chip away and pound out her anger. The work she did was rough but made her stronger, and she knew that if she could be strong enough, she could eventually get away.

Haha so I looked up Vex'ahlia, whom I've never heard of before and I'm a little freaked out....

Not only does she look a great deal like Mairin, not just in facial features but also in their attire....but she has a twin brother as well >.< And something about father figures walking out on her...

Creepy.

Critical Role is also a great show in which I'd advise you to watch it if you're A) Interested in DnD B) Actually like DnD C) Never seen DnD being played. Trust me, I think it's a fantastic game. Vex'ahlia is also a Ranger, so there's that as well.

Edit: The Show itself is, well let me quote Matthew Mercer on this,"A bunch of nerdy ass voice actors playing Dungeons and Dragons" (Mercer). ah english paper references With characters that have traversed through their story till level 8 or 10, I can't exactly place it; however, the comedy is gold there, friends and family alike are amazing to watch. Mercer is an excellent DM in my opinion and I don't think you'd be disappointed. Early shows are casted in low quality but gradually get better and better because CR brings Geek and Sundry a lot of subscribers and a lot of money.
