Metagaming is using knowledge that your character would otherwise have know way to procure, usually through OOC knowledge. Powergaming is effectively doing things like god modding or flat out ignoring the powers/abilities of other characters and making your character supersede all others.

Hi, I am a student currently at college, studying global affairs. I'm a big fan of roleplay, roleplaying in both tabletops and on World of Warcraft since I was a young child. I am mostly getting into this because my friends want to introduce me to Minecraft roleplay. I think it's a little odd, but I am down.

As Sam stepped off the boat in the final wave of refugees, he reflected for a moment on all that had brought him here. He hadn't come from much. As a member of the Anhalder peasantry he had been born in a small village which tithed mainly crops and some minor livestock. Sam never truly knew his parents. His mother had died in childbirth, and his father had been slain in a petty conflict between rival lords.
Sam had been raised for the most part by his uncle, August. A poacher and forester in the wilds of the King's Lands. Sam grew up with a bow in his hands and an axe at his hip. There was little he knew of the ways of the gentry. Great Knights and Lords of honor. He simple knew survival. Living day to day, meal to meal. Stalking deer in the kingswood one minute, hiding from game wardens another. It was a simple life, all in all. But it was a life nonetheless.
Things changed however, as they always do. When the invasion of the beasts came, it was the peasants who went first. Those drafted from their villages and forced into makeshift regiments to fight the battles their betters could not fight themselves. Sam, just old enough, managed to come along for the first battle. His emotions a mixture of terror and misguided excitement. Excitement that quickly disappeared the first few moments of battle. The battle became a withdrawal, the withdrawal became a retreat, the retreat became a route. Inch after inch. Mile after mile. Until entire Kingdoms were lost.
Sam never thought he was a coward. But if a coward was a man who lived, than a coward he was. Eventually it was him and August running. Running, hiding, surviving. Just as it was before. Though things were different this time. There was more on the line. Being caught by a game warden meanta losing a few fingers for a pheasant, or maybe your life for a deer. That was something they expected. It'd be quick, efficient. To be torn apart by those creatures? Something neither of them wished. But it was not their wishes that the creatures would heed should they find them.
It was a cold night when the beasts were upon them. One moment, they were having their supper around the camp fire, and the next, they were surrounded. Too many to count. Too many to fight. In the end it was August's last great gesture that saved Sam, cutting a path for Sam to escape only to be torn apart himself. On the quite lonely nights that followed, Sam could still hear August's screams as he was torn down.
The weeks that followed were the worst ones Sam had ever lived. Making his way to the evacuation boats and making his way to the new continent. There, in this land of refugee he might be able to make something of the gift August had given him. The gift of life.
