The test
Awaking, Beroit muttered a curse in his low, morning voice. A long battle with the pillow had made sure he had not slept. He had never been a heavy sleeper, but in this old straw mattress trying was not even worth it. Standing, he put on his dark grey doublet and soft black jerkin, wondered what the day held for him. The boat's swaying always made him dizzy, on top of that he'd had to gulp down a whole skin of wine last night to calm his nerves. Being here three weeks almost made him lose his mind. The sea stressed him out almost as much as the captain, a fat man with no neck, with a thunderous voice and a hard temper. Bero learned that on his first day here, the hard way.
The porridge Alalya gave him was acceptable at best, he smiled politely and ate it with a pleased face. Old witch, he thought. The captain didn't eat porridge, he ate honey glazed ham and cheese with his son in his huge, spacious cabin. Beroit had to work in the boat to pay his passage for the mainland, the man had made him scrub the floors and wash clothes. This was below him, he knew, but it had not been nearly the worst he had been treated.
Down in the lower level he found his bucket with a smelly cloth, as always, he spent until midday working around the boat, this morning the birds had been specially generous with their... gifts. A goodbye present. After work he bathed and ate hot chicken soup with brow, strong, ale. Reyne, the oldest man of the crew talked with him while they both had dinner and shared stories. Marching back to his room he felt as if his head was about to fall off, yet weary as he was, he couldn't close his eyes, so he took to writing in his diary.
Until someone screamed...
"EARTH!!" the joy was beyond words, all his life he had dreamed of seeing the great land the books spoke of, it was finally here, before him. He smiled, truly happy, truly eager to begin his new life. He thanked the captain (though not sincerely) and gathered his possessions. He felt incredible walking off the boat. Making way in the crowd, he saw so many people, so many lives, so many possibilities...
The air was crisp, the sun shining, and the future bright.
