Update: Jaypate and I have established the framework of the storyline and I have developed a prototype for the colonizer/transport vessel, the Flame of Oran, that we would all be starting on and if the current plan is put to work likely fracture into opposing factions over, along with some more
secret designs for use- ones that may or may not be used at all. Speaking of factions, I was wondering whether there were some good ideas floating around for the following storyline what-nots:
What real world nations remain? The Remnant Navy will be a significant faction, but we have yet to decide what nation it is from and what other nations were around to justify it's existence. Personally, I was thinking it would be along the lines of a post-NATO coalition with a left wing union of several Earth nations forming together to oppose the formerly mentioned coalition in it's dominance of space. Naturally, as the system we will be in will have formerly been under Coalition control, this Union would not be a significant force immediately, assuming we go with my idea. Either way, if you have some input it would be great.
What caused society to break down? This is the hard one. I really don't have much to say besides that it must meet the following criteria:
A: Interstellar communications and trade must have broken down (ie. we cannot contact Earth or any other significant place for assistance. And no W40k style Warp Storms either. Considered it. That's
probably not how the jump drives work, and I do point out that jump drives need to still work, again, for
secret reasons.)
B: The system we are in, and to some extent more advanced colonies like Earth, must be free of crippling destruction (ie they can't be outright destroyed. My first thought was plague, but a disease would be quite easy to contain in the vacuum of space, I would think.)
C: Society must have been fractured to the point of throwing humanity back into the Dark Ages.
D: No aliens.
You'll see why. Probably. Maybe not. Only if my ideas are made canon. Woah, I just realized we have a canon. Cool.
In general, think of it like this: you're from a really big and rich nation like the US. This nation is paying you and a bunch of people to go by boat overseas to go and build a city in a far-away region your nation owns, possibly with you only intended to be gone temporarily and leaving loved ones behind. While you are in transit, civilization breaks down and both your destination (which is essentially abandoned) and your home (thrown into massive destruction as dark age resource wars ensure.) What caused this collapse? Keep in mind you're free to add as much fluff as you feel is needed to justify your ends: if it's over someone making a back room trade agreement to work around another nation, which causes a global destabilization, just have the explanation of what resource it is and at least a basic idea of how it went down. Or just shout asinine scenarios until someone formulates an idea in their littered grey matter. I really got nothing on this part.
Finally, I'd just like to ask what people would prefer to start with:
A: Individual small personal-transport crafts (perhaps which could be converted into other things [fighters, freighters, etc] )
B: A single large ship (per faction) to be used as a base, still allowing for future creation of individual crafts
C: A better idea
Oh and just so you know, thus far I can confirm a
few mods are likely to make it in, mostly aesthetic ones. I'll link them to get your opinions if you are so inclined to investigate them, and tell me if there are any we should look at.

I'm sort of on the fence with this next one; I really like the idea, but it's just...clunky, to say the least, what with the current HUD

I am personally a huge fan of this next one, however so far as I can tell it's not working so well currently.

On a personal note my Steam ID is now the same as my name on here, Ray1333, so shoot me a friend request some time.
EDIT: Removed the repeat of the Sage desk and added the commercial LCD screen pack (no idea how I missed such an important mod before)
ADDITION: Found this piece of beauty:
