The saga of Cudgelquakes

Summer 553

Dear Mother,

Fabulous news darling, I beat the undead hordes! I know right, I bet your so proud of your little Imsy. Basically I sealed the fortress up and waited for a while, ingenious I know. The remaining zombie goblin must have just got bored and wandered off, a few fell in the river.

river zombies.png

Anyhoo just as we thought it was safe to go back outside...

minataur.png

A few dwarves were crushed by this beast, but most people were safely inside the fortress, otherwise we would have been in a right old pickle!

After sorting out the bother with the lack of coffins (all those #Marksdwarf corpses were clogging up the secure goblin corpse storage facility) I started to make preparations for the human caravan that had just been spotted. I was intrigued to finally meet a human, though I'd heard they can be quite brutish fellows.

caravan.png

They're so tall, my oh my I've never seen anything of the sort! All there with the big swords and smooth faces, oh they were a sight. I managed to flog them a couple of barrels of gnomeblight left from that terrible elf murder session last year, as well as half a tonne of stone crafts. In return I got a few odds and ends, some nice silks, as well as lots meat, fish and cheese, just as well as I'd just about had enough of cold plump helmets. They also had an adorable shark leather robe which I would have snapped up on the spot, but the cursed thing was too big, you can't imagine how upset I was when I found out it wasn't my size darling. I've put an order in to get one made, but it won't arrive till next year.

Just my luck though, the caravan had been followed by a party of goblins!

ambush at caravan.png

Thankfully though the merchants made short work of them.

human power.png

The peace didn't last long though...

ambush 2.png

Another ambush quickly routed, I was begginging to consider hiring these guys to stay as guards.

rout.png

All this fighting rather distracted me this season, I almost forgot to do any interior design. I set the new dining hall to be smoothed and engraved, and set up a hospital (not that we have any injured dwarves, but I like to be prepared)

Oh one last thing dear, one of my dwarves got possesed and fashioned this rather nice oaken scepter, Ill try and get it sent to you for your birthday.

sceptre.png

That goat bone door is the one I've got in my bedroom, a little macabre I know but in the dark you can hardly tell its made of bones, its too fabulous to have anywhere else.

Hope your well,
Love from your little tower-cap
Imsy

Autumn 553

Dear Mummykins

Autumn is here, finally a chance to dig out my cold weather clothes, though I was distraught to find that moths have nibbled a dirty great hole in my best alpaca wool coat!

Anyway, a quick roundup of this relativley quiet season, first of all here's some sketches of a couple of new engravings. Melbil still insists on doing lots of engravings of the foundation of Cudgelquakes, but I've managed to persuade him to broaden his choice subject matter a little more.

engraving1.png

engraving2.png

engraving3.png

Some scouts report of a great beast lurking in the lake in the caverns below the fortess (I dont know which scouts or how they did this scouting, as the cave is sealed up, but there was still a report on my desk for me to read with my breakfast cheese roast)

megabeast.png

We got some new migrants to replace those lost in the goblin corpse invasion, no one really noteworthy.

migrants.png

A dwarf who nipped outside for some logs was struck down by an ambush.

ambush again.png

The caravan from back home arrived but was immediatley set upon by another goblin ambush, oh it was awful.

merchant massacre.png

The outpost liason was brutally butchered, there were limbs and bits flying everywhere, it was just disgusting!

arcing limbs.png

Our mechanic also finished the mechanism I comissioned to commemorate the minataur attack, the spikes of guineafowl leather are a stroke of genius!

artifact.png

Nothing much else to report dear, the fortress is still locked down tight to protect from the two squads of goblin raiders camped on the far side of the river. I've set up an underground tree farm to provide a safe source of wood, as well as glassmaking and ceramics industrys to keep people occupied during this impromtu seige whilst creating some darling little crafts to sell to the elves next year.

Hows Dad doing? Is he coping with the incurable rot in his foot?

Lots of love
Imsykins

Winter 553

Still sealed in the fortress due to the goblin seige, I for one am glad as it's getting awfullly cold out there, the snow hasnt stopped since autumn! Another quiet season thankfully, gives me a little time to myself y'know, feeling much better now I've had my beard re-braided. I also picked up a new silk vest from the clothiers which you will absolutley love! Its got little smoky quartzes sewn on it and the way it catches the light is jut fabulous.

Anyway, to take peoples minds off the cold and the goblins I decided to try my hand at a little civil engineering. It was only meant to be a simple job, setting up a couple of waterwheels to power some millstones but there was a little 'accident'...

leak.png

No lasting harm done, and cleaning all the mud out of the dining room should take peoples minds of the hash I made of the mill project and the cold and the goblins. They need to step too it quick though, plants are springing up left right and center and damaging all those carvings related to the founding of Cudgelquakes!

impertinent vegetation.png

The final artifact of the year was presented to moi on Goblin Christmas, just what I needed for my quarters, and all that leather and bone really works well with my bone door for a sort of 'barbarian chic' look.

last aritfact.png

Oh I almost forgot, Ive written to the king and I've managed to get you and Papa a place in the next caravan, (if you want to come that is) but for now heres a drawing of me and little Cog that I commissioned right after i had my beard done.

me.png

(Hopefully) see you soon!

Love Imsykins

P.S The original expedition leaders Cavy passed away last night peacefully in his sleep, he was really quite upset but the fabulous dining hall soon made him forget all about it, we've got a new glass statue of a giant peregrine falcon that cheered him right up.

Well that was an fun-packed, goblin filled year, it was interesting taking over someone elses fort and seeing how different peoples play styles are, all those z-levels took a lot of getting used to :p

As I was playing in character that added an extra challenge as I had to force myself to play differently from how I usually play.

Few changes/new features:
  • Set up an underground tree farm - very slow so it might be best to leave it a season or two before it actually works properly, perhaps expand?
  • Set up a hospital and soap factory - things will to be queued here when wood is available for lye
  • Set up glass industry (next to tree farm)
  • Set up ceramics industry with fire clay (bottom right and quite high up in the z levels, inside the top of the mountain)
  • Failed mill - needs fixing
  • Dining room and offices
To do list (if you want to of course):
  • There are piles of cut gems for encrusting (it took all year to cut everything lars had left) on to things, try and set up a system with stockpiles to stop all those xXcave spider silk left mittenXx being encrusted instead of the actual crafts
  • Sort out the water system, the large pool at the bottom (currently empty) is the forts internal water source so it needs to be filled (pull the lever) but to get the waterwheels to turn the flow needs to be deeper. Requires a plumber with skill level of talented or higher
  • Dining room needs de-mudding to stop all the masterpieces being destroyed by plants. Place furniture-remove furniture to destroy the mud dusting
Here's the world file, and good luck to the next person

The Halfing Arrives
Dear lord, these dwarves think I'm a child. Although I am shorter than them and lack a beard, they have not an ounce of brainpower between them. And so it is in a fit of amusement, they decided to let me run this 'fortress' of theirs. Now, although I'm not a fan of the overground, these dwarves have the largest burrow I have ever seen. And what is with the pile of goblin corpses outside?! Believe me, this is going to be absolutely dreadful..
Child.png

Also I've seen some dwarves wandering around who believe they are much more important than me. This will have to change. They go by the names of Lars, Arcosanti and Wandering... I think I should trap them in a room together and see who eats the others first...

What in the world is this for, they seems to be digging out little squares...
Squares.png
My, my these dwarves are ever so confusing, I can't even talk to them properly. They just go on and on about ale and mining and about that shiny stone they found last week..

Well, as they think I'm their leader and they have nothing better to do, I have set the dwarves to making me a grand bedroom! I hope they make it nice and shiny and cover it with lots of engravings although I'm not quite sure they understood why I didn't want images of dying goblins. Stupid dwarves...
Room.png
I also tried to explain to the butcher that I wanted the previous rulers to mysteriously lose their pets, and he just stared at me blankly. Once again, I think they disrespect my childish appearance. Or maybe they're just thick.

And now this!
Weapon Rack.png
Why do I care how the dwarves first came here?! I want images of my self on anything made here on out. I even tried to threaten the craftsdwraf but he just shrugged and went back to picking his nose. These dwarves are goign to be the end of me, I swear it...

That's kind of the point of a bloodline though, to let things go horribly wrong :p
