There are people on this server who like these decisions. There are people that don't.

If the lore team decided to u-turn on these decisions the above statement would stand true. They cannot please everyone. They are not making certain decisions for the sole purpose of upsetting any single person or group of persons. Their ultimate goal is to establish not just a new world but a simplified lore and roleplaying framework to compliment it. Hollowworld grew bigger than we ever could have imagined - it takes a lot of hard work by dedicated players to take time out of their lives to help shape the worlds we play in and bring them to life. We have exciting plans for the server but some of them we just can't share yet.

i think airship and baloons won't be that much of a problem, if they would have entered the server in another way. seems like there were just too big steps taken, without explanations, without consent lore and so on and so on. that way, airships never met any restrictions, development or any general thoughts at all. suddenly there was a flying fortress.

maybe in the future, as soon as our awesome staff has sorted the current HW out a bit we can have development again, but then managed, loreapproved and....logical.

The main thing I should clarify again is that the chosen date is an approximation we're using so that we can mentally sort what is likely to, and is not likely to, appear. We're not modeling the world after the real one, but we are figuring out which things do and do not belong and having a date to use as a research point helps tremendously.

It's likely that we'll have some things as more advanced and some things as less advanced. Remember that the presence of magic drastically alters the Alteran society much more than any real life tech advance ever could.

That being said, when we use this base date to define 'medieval' in our heads, and we see that, for example, balloons for the sake of travel didn't even take off until the late 1800's, we know right there that we probably shouldn't have em.

--------------------------

In this instance, we all agreed that we should probably take corrective steps to get closer to the original vision. I've attempted, for example, to both cut back on the overall power of magic, as well as make earning it much, much harder, and I've been gathering up and disposing of any magic items that are substantially beyond what one would see in a low-magic game. (I myself am still mostly comparing to D&D games I've had based on ASoIaF, because I need to still sit down and read the darn books themselves.)

It's not to say I'm not a fan of high-magic games, I'm usually the warforged wizard riding the lightning rail.

But the point is that a setting's internal consistency is important. The HW I started playing with was very inconsistent, and it always bothered me because certain things felt out of place.

That's why we're moving towards a grey-er, more morally ambiguous, lower-magic, lower-fantasy vision, to regain the internal consistency.

Well I would agree to the decision after reading more on this thread... I mean I believe I once pointed out that the airships brought a semi-steam-punk feel to the server. (which in all reality a steam punk rp server is not a bad idea either imo, but not for THIS server).

So yes, we have the tech to probably create airships and a number of other technology - but we choose for them not to exist in this parallel dimension.
I respect your decision to take airships out, especially if something equally as awesome - horses - is there to replace them. I was wondering, though, is there any possibility for what Menel said? If enough time and roleplay is spent, would it be possible to eventually (I'm talking way in Altera's future) invent airships?

Rail is still incongruous for me. I even actively avoid it in vanilla MC which I know is derpy. I think the first real rails were iron plates on top of wooden beams in the mid 1700's. The presumably they learned how to roll solid iron rails towards 1800 and the rest is history as they say.

From my perspective, I don't see rail taking off as an important aspect of the server anyways, since I always tend to lag right out whenever using it and have a decent connection/machine, I can't imagine it for other people.

I agree to incongruity, and wonder if there is a point to keeping it.

Let's say it is a Dwarven tech and call it a day.

I realize we want to keep a certain level of technology here, but I'm sure we also want to play minecraft. We start getting rid of basic minecraft components, eventually the question would need to be raised on why we use minecraft at all, and not just have a forum for roleplaying.

Of course, if Notch ever gets some wild idea to let players create lazer guns and jetpacks, this argument would be rather invalid, but it seems as though the minecraft devs are keen on keeping the tech to a certain level, which seems to fit within medieval fantasy rather well.

Again, the vanilla MC stuff I'm not in the interest of purging from the game too much, but I have to wonder, does anyone really use rails for the sake of transportation? (Open question, feel free to reply.) [I know people use rails for certain diagonal build aesthetics.]

Well I don't see any sense in denying access to parts of MC - we're here to have fun. My point is that people might want some guidance on what kind of things they could be aiming for to keep the server in the approximate time period of medieval. That's why I noted clock vs watches and eyeglasses vs telescopes earlier.

Rail is a lot more useful since 1.5. Not for transport but as part of machinery with hoppers.

Welp, can always say:

"The rail pieces exist in the game because they're useful for a lot of things, but using them for transportation purposes really doesn't fit the server, so please don't do so as part of any permanent builds."?

I doubt we'll need this restriction, now that horses are going to be a far better and lazier approach to long distance transport. Probably the only people that would have a rail transport system would be underground realms like dwarven or greyling, and in those cases I think that would look interesting and different.

Yeah, basically I don't see rail being popular enough to ever be a problem, especially due to how expensive it is t build it legitimately.

It should be fine so long as build staff are aware of the fact.

I'm not sure that railway systems in Minecraft multiplayers are really convenient to use.... I'm not pro enough with servers and big playerbase, so I can only speak my mind without having any proofs ^^

When I see people on minecarts or pigs, they are usually about 10 seconds behind said vehicle.... Rails...meh they seem like more effort that it's worth.
