{Makani} Frequently Asked Questions
The makani are a peculiar race, and offer an interesting addition to the dynamic of HollowWorld. These are the dos, don'ts, and other prerequisites.
1. Read the lore.
With makani, they have unusual physiology and an ability to fly which is unique to compared to the other races. Make sure you're aware of their physiology.
2. They can fly, but there are RULES to their flight.
The Makani’s most defining trait is their wings. These large feathered appendages allow Makani to take flight and were useful for commuting across the floating island of Vata’inu. A Makani's wings are capable of carrying them in flight, but are not strong enough to support any significant amount of additional weight; they are unable to fly if carrying another person, if wearing any sort of metal armor other than gauntlets or greaves, or if otherwise encumbered by anything weighing more than ~50 pounds/22kgs. Flight will also be prevented if a Makani is fully submerged in water, their feathers being more akin to that of an eagle or hawk than the hydrophobic feathers of a duck, though they are still capable of flying in rain or snow.
Below is an example of the necessary space required to fly, where the magenta block represents the launch point, the grey blocks representing the necessary room for their wingspan, and where the blue blocks represent the minimum 'running start' necessary to take one less emote to gain flight.
(Elytra Wings can be purchased at Storm's Landing. They are OOC for everyone, but IC for makani characters)
3. They have good eyesight. Like.... Really good. Way good.
If you have Optifine installed, feel free to make use of the "Zoom" capability. It's not required that you have it, but it's good to get an idea of how detailed their vision can be.
4. They came from an island where famine was routine and caste systems were enforced by 'The Will of Manna,' as interpreted by the A'Keiyah. They're going to be surprised by life in Altera.
No more limited resources. No more hoarding and hiding food from other clans when there's a bad year for crops. Their entire societal structure, defining government, and religion has been forced into a shift upon setting foot on the ground once more. How will your character handle this change? Embrace it or believe it to be a wild and unstructured system?
5. Don't go around teaching Yakai like it's nothing
Take a look at the Yakai thread specifically. Yakai isn't something to just go around teaching everyone. A makani would need A LOT of convincing, and a damn good reason, before they're teach a groundling their sacred tongue. Even those that have acclimated to life on the ground would still view it as a sacred tongue.
6. Have fun, guys.
Come on! It's BIRD PEOPLE!!! The sky's the limit.
